Instructional Propagation Succulents

Succulent Propagation *Update*

Last month I posted about how to propagate succulents via cuttings – and it’s time for an update!

Almost all of the cuttings have started to grow roots. One way to test if roots have started is to give a gentle tug on the cutting – if there is resistance, there are roots! I pulled this guy out to show you the root development.

I initially had the cuttings in an East facing window. I didn’t want them to have direct light until they started some root development. Now that they are mostly rooted, I have moved them under artificial lighting and gave them there first drink of water.

As far as the original plants that I harvested the cuttings from, they are putting out new growth as well! Remember, by taking the top of the plant, it removes the upward growing point, and redirects the energy and growth back down the stem, thus creating more branching. Below you can see where the original cut was made, and the new growth around and below.

Many of the leaves I pulled from the base of the cuttings are also doing well, developing roots, babies, or both! I’ll do a more-in-depth post in the future about leaf propagation, but below you can see the progress!

So that is that! The props are off to a great start, and the mama plants are already pushing out new growth for future cuttings! Success!

Kari, so in the last picture it looks as if you just laid them on top of the soil? Or are they put into the soil?

You are correct, they are just sitting on top of the soil, and the roots will find their way down where they need to be!
